Club Notes 9/3/08

Results: The County ‘B’ championships took place in the Green School on Saturday 8th of March. This competition was well attended by many clubs throughout Kerry. There was, however, a very small turnout from our members, which is unfortunate as this is not only an enjoyable event but it also serves as a gauge to athletes of what the forthcoming competition for the year is at county level.

Starting with U9s, Emma Godley competed in the sprint and hurdles, putting in a fine effort in both events. In U10s Jade Smullen competed well in the sprint and the shot. U11 girls included Jenny Godley and Laura Courtney, both running well and putting in good effort in the sprint and hurdles competition. In the U11 boys we had fine performances from two of our excellent athletes, Andrew Phillip and Jason Roche. Andrew effortlessly took gold in the sprint and hurdles final. This athlete has always shown great talent in athletics and the club coaches feel we will see more from this young man in 2008. Jason, another of our very promising boys at this age group took bronze in the shot while putting in a good performance in the sprint and hurdles also.

Orla Sheehy had an excellent day winning the U12 girls hurdles and going on to take bronze in the sprint final. Orla is a steady performer who demonstrates great tenacity at all competitions. A well deserved win. Relative newcomers Fiona O’Sullivan and Grace Courtney also competed in the girls U12 sprint and hurdles, each putting in commendable effort and showing great promise. U13s included Amy Phillip, another steady club competitor, who performed well in the sprint and hurdles and Ger Browne who easily won silver in the boy’s U13 shot competition. Well done to all for great performances.

One of the club’s masters athletes, Stephen Griffin competed in the Ballycotton road race this weekend and came first in the over 50s category with a great time of 56.47m which put him in 25th position overall for this race. This race is one of the top road races in the athletics calendar and as such is well attended, with stiff competition for medal places at all categories. Congratulations to Stephen on a fantastic performance.

Well done to all Tralee Harriers athletes that attended the Munster Secondary Schools Athletic Indoor Championship in Nenagh last week. Most notable performances came from our high jump athletes Andrew Kearney (1.93m) and Ciara Walsh (1.64m) both taking gold on this occasion. Well done on excellent achievements!
