RESULTS

Tralee Harriers organised the primary school sports, which took place in the ITT on Friday evening and kicked off a wonderful weekend of athletics. Despite a weather report to the contrary, it remained dry and although the crowds were down on last year, the event was deemed an overall success. Tralee Harriers athletes featured very strongly in all races. Orla O’Reilly ran fantastically to take gold in the girls 1st class 60m race with Emma Godley happily taking silver and Cathal McLoughlin ran well to come third in the boys 1st class 60m. The girls 2nd Class 80m was dominated by our girls with Rachel Bowler battling it out with Emer Brosnan to take gold and silver respectively and Meabh Pierse taking bronze. In the girls 2nd Class 100m, Rebecca Ryan took silver followed by Elena McLoughlin taking bronze. Eoghan O’Buachalla won the boys 2nd Class 80m with Ciaran O’Reilly taking bronze while Tomas Sheehy took silver in the boys 2nd Class 100m. Our third class girl Aoife O’Carroll took gold and hot on her heels was fellow clubmate Aoibheann O’Brien for second place with Emma McCarthy taking bronze in an exciting final. The girls 3rd Class 200m race was won by Carla Hanafin with Emma Pierse taking silver. The boys 3rd Class 80m was won by Jason Roche with clubmates Tomas Leen and Kieran Dwyer coming second and third respectively. Boys 3rd Class 200m was won by newcomer Michael Linnane. The girls 4th Class 100m was won by Courtney Ryan with Orna Foley and Orla Sheehy taking second and third. Grace Hickie took gold in the girls 4th Class 200m. Boys 4th Class 100m and 200m were won by Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Donnagh O’Buachalla respectively with Cathal O’Reilly taking third in the 200m also. In the girls 5th Class 100m, Clara Heinrich took silver with Iseult Ni Bhuachalla taking bronze in the 6th class 100m race. In the Boys 6th Class races Shane O’Sullivan took bronze in the 100m while Ger Browne took gold in the 600m. The Girls 6th Class 600m was won by Jane Hickie. On to the relays, Caherleheen School dominated, winning all but two relays, with teams in which Tralee Harriers featured strongly. Many of our athletes competed in the teams from the other primary schools and all ran very well. A great occasion which will culminate in the finals on Tuesday 27th of May at 7pm in Castleisland.

Sunday Kerry Juvenile County Championships for U9-U13 (Day 1): The turnout from the club was disappointing for this age group. A lot of work is required to train the huge attendances at the ITT on Tuesday night but unfortunately this does not translate to attendance at competition. Nonetheless, those that did attend acquitted themselves very well with many taking medals in what turned out to be very competitive events, particularly the sprints. Our juvenile girls ran well with Emma Godley, Megan O’Donnell, Orla O’Reilly and Meabh Pierse running in the U9 60m. Orla, a newcomer to the club, had a tremendous weekend winning 4 medals in all. Orla won silver in the 60m and 200m, bronze in the long jump and in the U9 4 x100 relay. Meabh Pierse took bronze in the 60m sprint also. Emma Godley took silver in the long jump with some very determined jumping. The four U9 girls won bronze in the relay with spirited performances in all legs of the race. Cathal McLoughlin did well, putting in a strong performance in the U9 boys 60m race also. Our U10 girls constituted Rachel Bowler, Emma McCarthy, Elena McLoughlin, Rebecca Ryan and Emma McCarthy, who did very well to get two bronze medals for the 60m and 200m races. Rachel, a fine sprinter, was unlucky on this occasion to be outside the medals. Rebecca Ryan won bronze in the ball throw, an event she is showing great aptitude for. Competing at U11was Aoife O’Carroll, Aoibheann O’Brien, Emma Pierse and Jenny Godley with Aoife and Aoibheann taking gold and bronze respectively in a very fast 80m sprint final. These girls also took gold and silver respectively for the long jump, another event that this dynamic duo has dominated on many occasions. Not content with this, Aoife went on to take silver in the ball throw and then teamed up with her clubmates and good friends Aoibheann, Jenny and Emma to take bronze in the U11 girls relay, all in all a very satisfying day for these girls. The U11 boys for the weekend were Jason Roche, Tomas Leen, Dara O’Nuallain and Ciaran O’Reilly. Jason and Tomas put in great effort in their 80m getting to the final of this event. This age group for boys is tremendously competitive at present so the boys did very well considering. Dara entered the long jump and the shot and these three boys were joined by Ciaran O Reilly for the U11relay where they all ran well but unfortunately were not in the medals. Our U12 girls constituted Courtney Ryan, Orna Foley, Clara Heindrick and Grace Hickey. All the girls ran well to get to the 100m final and Courtney, who is having a great year so far, took silver. Courtney also went on to easily take gold in the high jump with a p.b. of 1.22m with Clara Heindrick taking bronze. Courtney joined up with Michaela Regan, Grace Hickey who is also looking very strong at the minute and Mary Doody for the U13 girl’s relay. All girls ran fantastically in each leg to bring home silver. Mary who is back after injury and looking very impressive this season also won bronze in the U13 long jump. At U13 boys, a very dedicated Ger Browne performed well this weekend to take bronze in the javelin and the 800m race. Meanwhile, back in Tralee on Sunday the Fit4life running league took to the roads to demonstrate their talents also in a 5-mile road race for the Irish Heart Foundation. The women’s race was won by Tralee Harrier’s Carmel Kelly. Also taking part on the day were Mary Mullins, Siobhan Ni Nuallain, Una O’Mahony, Tom Diggins Tommy Horan, Ian and Deirdre Moss to name a few, all of whom had very satisfactory personal performances. Well done to all and great credit due to Gerry O’Sullivan for his dedication and mentoring.

Not all of the results of the Munster Juniors, U23s and Masters were available at the time of going to press. These results will be available in next week’s notes.
