Club Notes 1/9/08

Munster ‘B’ Juvenile Championship: Well done to all the athletes and their parents who attended the championship on Sunday, the last day of August and the day of the Kerry V. Cork replay, when many might have chosen to be elsewhere! An efficiently run competition saw most catching some moments of the match. Just as much was at stake for some in An Riocht where the Munster B competition kicked off at 11am. Competition at the younger ages is quite stiff at the minute so all competitors in these age groups and their parents should be extremely proud of the performances. Also important to remember is that personal bests and recording improvements throughout the season should be the focus for all. Starting with the Girls Under 9, Orla O’Reilly put in her usual impressive performance to win two bronze medals for the 60m and long jump, recording a p.b of 3.02m. Congratulations to Orla on a well deserved win to end a very successful first year in athletics. Emma Godley came 4th in the same competition with a jump of 2.80m and competed in a tough 300m race. Eimear Brosnan contested the Girls U10 60m and came 4th in the long jump (3.19m) narrowly missing out on a medal and only 10 cm behind gold. Rebecca Ryan, Elena Mc Loughlin, Rachel Bowler and Emma McCarthy also competed well in the girls U10 60m, long jump and ball throw with some of these girls getting to the finals of hotly contested competitions. At U11, Caoimhe Walsh and Ciara Murphy, a welcome newcomer to the club, both competed in the 80m and long jump competitions putting in some solid performances. In the U12 High jump, Courtney Ryan won silver with a jump of 1.20m whilst also getting to the final of the 80m sprint. Mary Doody was in great form easily taking silver in the Girls U13 600m after which she also competed in the long jump (7th).

In the Boys U9 Cathal McLoughlin was very impressive coming 4th at the end of a 300m race that saw him in joint lead all the way, requiring a photo finish to separate him from the elusive bronze medal. There is no doubt Cathal will be victorious in future races. Gearoid Fitzgerald had a very successful day on Sunday. He got to the final of the Boys U9 60m sprint and quickly followed this with a gold medal in the U9 long jump for a jump of 3.33m. Congratulations to Gearoid and Cathal on their fine performances.

A very promising U10 athlete, Brian Kennedy brought home two medals on Sunday, winning bronze in the 60m and gold in the long jump for a p.b. performance of 3.91m. A tight finish in the U10 300m saw a very well deserved bronze medal win for Michael Linnane who also competed in the long jump competition. Equally happy with his impressive performance was first cousin Ciaran O’Reilly, who won gold in the U10 ball throw and also competed in the long jump. David Fitzmaurice showed great improvement in sprinting style on Sunday and the hard work will definitely pay-off next year. Diarmuid O’Sullivan also did well in a fast-paced race. A great competitor, Jason Roche came 5th in the U11 boys ball throw and got to the final of the boys 80m. Another athlete with great hopes for the future is Liam Kennedy, who competed in the U12 boy’s long jump and sprint. Without a doubt the Tralee Harriers athlete of the competition was Ger Browne who won gold in the Boys U13 high jump (1.25m) and the shot putt competition (9.36m). Geri’s tremendous tenacity is a quality that will always pay off. Brian Barry also finished off a very successful first year in athletics by winning silver in the Boys U14 100m. Congratulations to all club members past and present who competed in Mosney last weekend. A great time was had by all.
