Club Notes 29/6/07

RESULTS:  The last few weekends have been very busy on the athletics front. The Munster Senior T&F was down for decision on Sun 17th June last. Philip Keearney took double gold in the 110mH and 400mH events in times of 15.40 and  54.97. Eoin Leen took gold in the discus with a throw of 48.82 with Alan O Connor third (34.02) and Leo Sharkey 4th (33.88). Patsy O’Connor won gold in the shot with a throw of 12.90 with Leo Sharkey third on 11.14 in the same event. Patsy also took gold in the 56bs for distance and silver in the 56lbs for height. Eoin Leen also competed for the National team in Finland this past weekend where he threw 51.42m.

At the National Juveniles U9-U12 in Cork, the club had some great performances particularly from Aoife O’Carroll and Aoibheann O’Brien who claimed gold in the sprint and silver in the long jump in the team competitions. A fantastic achievement for both girls. The girls U9 in their first year out also did themselves very proud by coming second in the National U9 relay. The team of Eimear Brosnan, Emma McCarthy, Rachel Bowler, Rebecca Ryan and Elena McLoughlin had to run against the clock for their 2nd spot but that did not perturb them too much. The U11 girls were fifth overall on time but this is a huge achievement also for these girls. All five girls of Courtney Ryan, Orna Foley, Orla Sheehy, Grace Hickie, and Clara Heinrich have been the most consistent performers in all competitions this year at county level.

Meanwhile across the city in CIT, the Munster Juvenile U15-U19 T&F championships were taking place and the club was very successful here also. Michael Godley has been in hot form all year and on Sunday he brought home a gold and silver medal. He was unlucky to take 4th in the 200m but that won’t bother him too much as he pull a huge jump of 5.36m to easily win the long jump. He easily took 2nd in the hurdles also in a time of 13.46s. Claire Fitzgerald grabbed a gold on Sunday and added a new championship best to the Munster records with a throw 13.98. This was after an incredible day at the Tailteanns Games the previous day where she achieved gold in the shot, discus and javelin and athlete of the games. Karen O’Connor, our other thrower of the day, claimed third spot in the discus with a throw of 30.58 and third also in the shot (8.28). Cian Foley claimed his first individual Munster medal in the 200m coming home third in a time of 24.29s in the U17 boys. Ben McGilton also claimed third in the 200m in the U18 boys with a time of 23.83. In the boys U19, David Boyd and Michael Kelliher claimed second and third spot in times of 24.40 and 24.59 respectively. Michael also added a high jump medal to his haul for the day coming third with a jump of 1.60m. Dara O’Carroll claimed second in the 400m in a time of 53.34s. Other notable performances came from Sinead O’Connor in the long jump coming fifth with a jump of 4.48m and with a bit of luck she will get a day out at the Nationals in July. Ciara Walsh came home sixth in the hurdles after just coming back from her lengthy layoff due to injury.

Well done to all out athletes who competed in the Community Games recently and also at the F’fore/Maine Valley Open Sports. A word of thanks to all coaches and parents who have helped out over the last week or so at the various competitions.
