Notes 4/7/06 On Sunday last in Tullamore the National Junior and U-23 Track & Field Championships took place. We had a number of individual competitors and a team in the 4 x 100m Junior Relay. Pride of place goes to the relay team of Aonghus Carmody (returning to the club for his first run this year), Alan O'Connor, David Boyd and Patrick Phelan who won Gold against very strong opposition from Shercock Athletic Club from Cavan. Indeed Shercock's relay team has won several national titles as well as having individual medal winners at national level so it was quite an achievement for our boys to take Gold against such opposition in a very good time of just over 44 seconds. Well done! On the individual side Alan O'Connor won Silver in the 35lbs Weight for Distance as well as Bronze in the Shot. Patrick Phelan was fourth in the 100m and Karen O'Connor was 5th in the Discus. Overall a good day for the club in strong competition. Next week-end (8th and 9th July) the National Track & Field Championships for U-14 to U-19 take place in Tullamore. These are all individual events and we will have a number of competitors taking part so hopefully next week I will be able to report on further successes. On the following week-end (15th and 16th July) the National Juvenile (U-9 to U-13) Championships (Sunday) and the National Juvenile Relay Championships (Saturday) take place in Cork at the CIT grounds. After our many successes at Munster level, particularly with our relays, we have many competitors taking part in these championships so keep up the training over the next couple of weeks to make sure we are as well prepared as possible. Last Sunday the Church Gate collection for the Kerry County Athletic Board took place and we were responsible for collecting at St. John's Church in Tralee. Thanks to all who contributed and who collected on the day and especially to Adrienne who organized everything. On Monday last in Castleisland the International Meeting was organized by Riocht Athletic Club with many top-class athletes competing both from Ireland and abroad. It was a very enjoyable evening and credit must go to the organizers and the sponsors for making it happen. It was great to see Eoin Leen in the colours of Tralee Harriers competing and winning Bronze in the Discus against strong international competition. Outdoor training continues at Mounthawk Secondary School from 7:00 to 8:00pm on Tuesdays for all athletes and in Castleisland from 7:00 to 8:00pm on Thursdays for all athletes who have qualified for the National finals both individually and in relays. Forthcoming events are as follows: National Juvenile U-14 to U-19 T&F Championships, Tullamore, Saturday and Sunday 8/9 July National Juvenile U-9 to U-13 T&F Championships, Cork IT, Saturday 15 July National Juvenile Relays, Cork IT, Sunday 16 July National Juvenile Combined Events, Tullamore, Saturday and Sunday 29/30 July All dates and more detailed timetables are published on the website as soon as they are made available at www.traleeharriers.com . |
