Club Notes 27/6/06

The Munster Juvenile Track and Field Championships for U-14 to U-19 took place in Castleisland on last Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The weather was dry and mostly warm with a slight breeze which made it generally suitable for good athletics. The standard was as usual very high and it was great to see good competition in many events amongst the finest young athletes in Munster.

Overall our club did very well especially in the relays. We also had some fine individual performances which resulted in a good collection of medals for the club. Without the full detailed results I cannot say for certain but I am fairly sure that we were by far the most successful Kerry club at these championships.

Claire Fitzgerald, as we have come to expect from her, had a very successful championships with three gold medals in the U-16 Javelin, Discus and Shot Putt. In the Javelin she also set a new Munster record. These victories immediately followed her successes at the Tailteann Games in Tullamore where she also won three Gold Medals in the same events even though she was two years within her age category. Certainly Claire is having a very successful season.

Also having a successful season is David Boyd who won Gold Medals in the U-18 100m and 200m races. Winning both sprints against strong competition is a major achievement and is further evidence of David's good progress in 2006.

Patrick Phelan recorded a Gold Medal in the U-19 100m and a Bronze in the 200m and another Gold Medal winner was Andrew Kearney who won the U-16 High Jump. Andrew continues to perform well in this event.

Other medal winners were Ben McGilton who recorded two Silvers in the U-17 100m and 200m against strong competiiton. Danny O'Connor, in his first Munster Championships, won Bronze in the U-15 100m and Robert Sugrue won Silver in the U-18 300m Hurdles. Jamie Burns won Bronze in the U-15 200m, Sarah McLoughlin won Bronze in the U-19 Shot and Karen O'Connor also won Bronze in the U-18 Discus and Javelin. There may be some individual results which I have omitted but I will include next week when I have the complete list of results.

In the Relays we had successes in the U-14 Boys 4x100m (Silver), U-15 Boys 4x100m (Silver), U-16 Boys 4x100m (Bronze), U-18 Boys 4x100m (Gold), U-18 Boys 4x400m (Gold and set a new Munster record for this event) and U-19 Boys 4x100m (Gold). Our Girls U-14 team won Bronze in the 4x100m and the Girls U-15 team performed very well but were up against strong competition in their event.

Overall as you can see these were very successful Munster Championships for the Club and credit must go to the athletes and their coaches for these great results. Also the contribution of several members of our club who acted as officials over the three days must be noted and their involvement helped to ensure that all the events went off smoothly and in good time.

On Saturday and Sunday (1st and 2nd July) the Annual Kerry County Board Church Gate Collection will take place in Tralee. The money raised goes to promote athletics in Kerry and we have to provide some volunteers for the collection. If you can make yourself available please contact Adrienne who will be delighted to hear from you.
