Club Notes 1/7/06

The National Combined Events were held in Tullamore last week-end and we had three competitors taking part. Once again we were successful at national level with Ciara Walsh taking Silver in her U-14 age group. Ciara has been one of the club's most consistent athletes in 2006 and thoroughly deserves her success. Again, as I have mentioned several times in these notes, success at national level does not come easily, and particularly in a multi-discipline event, so great credit is due to Ciara for her outstanding performance.

Also competing in Tullamore in the U-14 combined events were Sinead O'Connor and Luke O'Keeffe who were both just outside the medals.

In Castleisland on Sunday last the Kerry Senior Championships took place. We had a strong team competing in the Men's Section including Patsy and Alan O'Connor, Tony Barnett, David Boyd, Robert Sugrue, Eoin Leen, Leo Sharkey, David and Andrew Kearney. We won several of the events including an exciting Medley Relay at the end. Perhaps the highlight of the day was Eoin Leen's throw in the Discus of more than 56 metres recording both a personal best for him and also the furthest throw in Ireland this year. Well done Eoin!

Overall we were easy winners of the Quill Cup which is awarded to the top senior club in Kerry for male athletes.

In the Women's section we had Karen O'Connor and Grace Kearney representing the club and both competed well winning several medals. However our lack of numbers prevented us from making a challenge for the top senior club in Kerry for female athletes.

From an overall point of view however the turnout of athletes in Kerry was poor. Considering this was the Kerry Championships one would have expected greater support from clubs and athletes throughout the county. This is certainly an issue that could be addressed by the County Board.

Our season is now drawing to a close. It has been a great success for the club with many medals won at all levels, National, Munster and County and in all age groups. We have some very talented athletes and many with potential to compete and win at the highest level. With the expectation that our grounds on the Dan Spring Road will be available for use next season we can look forward to further success in 2007.

Training takes a break for the rest of the Summer. Any Open Sports which will be held in Kerry later in the Summer will be mentioned in these notes and on our Web-site www.traleeharriers.com .
