Club Notes 8/11/05

The club took its first Munster Cross Country medal of the season last weekend with Stephen Walsh claiming a medal in 10th spot in the U14 1500m. Stephen started well in a field of 100 plus and settled in the first 20 or so. The pace never relented and he had to put in a very hard final 300m to move him into the reckoning with his tenth spot claimed in the final 50m. Stephen goes onto the Nationals in 4 weeks time and will also form part of the Munster team at that event. Ger Browne also acquitted himself finishing 23rd in a 200 plus field in the boys U10 600m. In the boys U12 1000m Paul McMahon (43th), Jack Barry (48th), Darragh Carmody (50th), and Gavin Peevers (66th) bunched well but finished outside the medals for a club position. The county cross country relays take place in Killarney on November 13th and we hope to be taking a number of teams to that event. The remaining cross country fixtures for the season are as follows: County Senior/Junior & Uneven Age Relays, November 13th, Killarney; Munster Juvenile B & Masters, 4th December in Limerick; National Novice & Even Age Juvenile, 11th December Ballinrobe; Munster Senior & Junior & Juvenile Relays 15th January in Kerry; National Juvenile B, 22nd January in Athlone. National Intermediate & Masters, 5th February in Cork.

As the Cross Country season draws to a close for most athletes, winter conditioning training continues for all athletes U12 upwards (this year's U11). Tentative targets that athletes should be considering now are the combined events (hurdles, 800m, shot, HJ, LJ) scheduled for 31st of December, Scottish Indoors 4th/5th February for U13, U15, U17 and U20 and the Munster Indoors younger ages 18th/19th February, Munster Indoors older ages 25th/26th February and National Indoors in March with dates to be confirmed. Indoor juvenile circuit training will take place in the Green school gym from 13th of November onwards from 4.30-6pm with an extra half hour given over to training for HJ, LJ and shot. Juvenile outdoor training takes place on Tuesdays at 7-8pm for U12 upwards at Na Gaeil GAA pitch. We are planning to introduce an extra session on Friday evenings as that seems like an evening that suits most. More on this anon. There will be a juvenile athletes meeting on the 13th of November after the indoor training for about 20-30 minutes. There is a juvenile development day in Castleisland on November 19th from 11am to 1.30pm.

Masters Indoor Circuit training continues on Mondays at the KDYS Hall from 8-9pm. Munster Masters Indoors is scheduled for the 31st of December. Munster Senior and Junior Indoors is scheduled for 8th or 9th of January.

The club is collecting Tesco vouchers as part of their clubs and schools scheme. So members and athletes willing to give their vouchers to the club can do so at the training sessions.
